Where to Swing Dance in a Time Machine

Gatsby Party, 2012

What if I told you for one night you could go back in time to the Jazz Age in Los Angeles? That you could be plucked from the present and dropped into one of those spectacular over the top parties in the 1920s, would you be interested?

What if I told you that I have done it before?  That I have walked through the chandeliered lobby and up a staircase filled with giggling flappers nestled on the arms of men in timeless pinstriped suits with champagne in their hands. That I have Lindy Hopped with a thousand of my fellow Angelenos into the wee hours of the morning. What if for one night you could experience the roaring 20s? That you could dance cheek to cheek with someone one minute and swing into the Charleston the next, am I tempting you?

If you want to join me, my ticket to the past is called the Gatsby Party. This annual event (but not this year, I will get to that later) is held at at the Park Plaza Hotel on the edge of MacArthur park which straddles downtown Los Angeles and Koreatown. The Plaza is the perfect location as everything has been restored to its opening ceremony glamour. Everyone plays their part and attendees really get into it. The dress, the dance, the attitude. Los Angeles costume rental houses are mined for rhinestone headdresses, pork pie hats, and feathered everything. You could easily forget that you are experiencing the 1920s almost a century later. (Except for the glow of smart phone screens)

Every bit of the space is used for this event. The terrace is a place for food trucks. I know not very 20s, but after the bubbly starts popping you will be thankful for a little something if you are feeling peckish.. The dining rooms turned into photobooths, three ballrooms are open for your dancing pleasure -two for Swing, Lindy Hop, Jazz, and Big Band music and the other ballroom for current radio hits.

I am sure you were, like me, so sad that this year’s event had to be canceled due to a fire permit snafu. No time machine this year sadly. Hopefully next year everything will be in order.

The Who, What, When, Where and Whys?: Since this event is unfortunately in limbo, I will update information for next year’s event when I have it.

Additional information: The production company who puts on this event, Drink.Eat.Play also puts on the very popular 1980s and 1990s proms. The 80s prom will take place on February 6th, 2016
